Reading is apparently too hard for the front page folks. No one in this thread is saying we should be driving “new” 50 year old cars, but rather that it’s difficult to get a bare bones car these days which is inflating prices. He keeps going on about cars being 10x what they used to be, acknowledges inflation and yet completely ignores inflation. I pull some stats off the interwebs showing, yes even base model cars are more expensive (at least MSRP is), but it’s no where near 10x. Yet he tells me to google it. Stay off the FP kids.

But that’s what I want to drive.

FP story with 500 comments is like a Youtube video with 500 comments.

I #resist going to the FP. I wonder if attorneys or debate teams use the defense of “Google it” with any success?

I love the FP.

I love the “Google it” response because if actually used Google, it would have told him he’s wrong lol

Me too, but that’s not what I was arguing here. Nor was anyone else. Oh man, but if I could buy a new old vehicle I totally would, and then my wife would yell at me for something about safety and whatnot.

I mean, you can buy literally every piece of a ‘67 Mustang brand new, so you can, but the real hipsterdom would be building a ‘32 Ford brand new, which is an 86 year old car, so...

Even the chassis?

Not only yes, but emphatically yes:

Hmmm...this is putting thoughts and ideas in my head that I really don’t need. I didn’t know you could literally buy a chassis, that’s awesome.

Depending on state - you walk up to a lot of them and say “It’s a reproduction of model year ___” and they’re all like “no wai” and you’re like “ya wai”, and they’re like “k”.

The “right” way to do a ‘32 is to buy a repro steel body to go with. Heavier, pricier, but built to tighter tolerances than a fiberglass one, safer, stiffer, and more to the point, more original.

This is usually something along my response when people ask a stupid question while sitting in front of a computer, or when someone tells you to google some crap.

I want to drive a new 20/25-year-old car. Please send new JZX100s to my house.

All I’m saying is that 50 years ago, one fully employed family member could purchase a home, own one or more cars, and support a family of 3+ on one salary without ending up homeless or starving to death.
Wouldn’t that be nice?

I don’t even know that it is inflating prices that much. The famously cheap (and crappy) Yugo started at around $8800 in today’s dollars. Now it’s true that in the US you can’t buy new car for that money, but for $1000 more, you can get a Chevy Spark, which is vastly superior in pretty much every way. There are some pretty cheap cars available (which again are way better than the cheap cars of days past), people would just rather take advantage of cheap credit to get something fancier.

I’ll take a brand new FD rx7, a brand new 87 Crx Si, and a brand new Subaru Brat. I don’t have many money but I’ll trade my 2011 328xi, and 2010 Honda Fit. Thanks.

Which is kind of what I was saying. Base model to base model prices haven’t changed that much when accounting for inflation. But unless you order from the factory try finding a base model on a dealer lot.

Mario, you can’t have respectful disagreements with many people on the FP for the same reason you can’t do it with anyone on a large internet board. Everyone can say anything they want and they don’t have to backup anything they say because no one knows each other. Smaller places like Oppo have more of a social group dynamic because the regular posters develop relationships and have more skin in how they appear to each other. Sure we’re still anonymous, but not really. People tend more to rattle off whatever when they think they won’t have to see you again, but consider more what they say to you when they know they’ll have to interact with you on a daily basis.

That’s a whole other can of worms. Wage stagnation is going to cause another recession. People can only borrow for so long until it becomes unsustainable.

Which is probably the driving reason for the state of things in the world in general right now

It is. As technology has made our communities worldwide, it has allowed us to let out our inner assholes without consequences. There is much less pressure these days to behave with the manners that our parents taught us.
